About Me

Welcome! I’m Sam Routley. I’m a Doctoral Student in Political Science at the University of Western Ontario. My research focuses on centre-right and conservative politics, situated at an intersection of electoral behavior, public policy, and the history of political thought. That is to say, I am interested in examining both the conservative intellectual tradition itself and the way it actually informs or is shaped by contemporary political dynamics (institutions, elections, parties, and policy outcomes). My dissertation, in particular, analyses contemporary Canadian conservatism through the lens of the electoral, programmatic, and ideological transformations seen throughout centre-right parties in the United States, United Kingdom, and Continental Europe.

I am also a frequent contributor, whether in the form of media interviews, opinion columns, or long-form essays, to a variety of newspapers, magazines, and websites. My work has appeared in The National PostThe ConversationThe HubThe Hill TimesThe American Conservative, and C2C Journal, among others.

When not writing, I am usually reading or watching baseball; the main problem with living in London, Ontario is that you are close, yet so very distant, to the Rodgers Centre.
